- Lay-in; breakfast with C. Kaufman, interesting;
Holger Dryoff arrived for the end. Phoned J. who was feeling
sad, bad dreams, lost the (new) house; needed a hug; problematic
from another continent sadly.
- Drove uneventfully along the interstate, being
passed by most people: breaking the law by more than me. Checked
in, met Deborah Anderson - CIO off on holiday with her daughters;
a pleasant lady seemingly.
- Sat next to Vickie, a grandmother of 17, and Mormon
missionary to Hawaii, had an extremely long, most interesting
and friendly conversation, during which I gleaned several things:
- In contrast to many broad churches, it seems
there is little room for discussion / differences of opinion;
indeed - when faced with a tough applied Christian morality
question; the quandry seems to be not knowing what the Church's
position is, rather than any suggestion that this might be an
area in which we may all legitimately and charitably differ /
wrestle with applying our faith.
- The LDS apparently have a fixed view on the
literal creation which is interesting. People would
also tend not to choose / prefer a church whose style
fitted their temperament but go to the nearest.
- The Brigham Young: As man is, God once was;
as God is, man may become. is still in vogue / an
accurate doctrinal statement.
- Seemed to be some feeling that the LDS were
in some sense especially singled out as 'non-christian' by
main-stream churches; whereas in fact this is not so:
the Jehovah's Witnesses would be one obvious similar
example. Similarly amazed at her level of support for
George Bush - impressed with his political skill.
- Seemed to be a lack of awareness of other
faiths, despite spending time teaching missionaries in
Pakistan had only the sketchiest awareness of Muhammed's
life and teaching, gained from a popular film.
- No well crafted polemic for Muslims; Islam
bearing several superficial similarities; but having a
firm Prophecy termination clause.
- Seemed to be a lack of awareness of the truth
and exclusivity claims of other popular creeds; such as
the JW's, the Roman Catholic church in a vague sense.
- Very interesting; (and quite possibly not representative
of mainstream opinion / experience - corrections solicited); Didn't
get to the fascinating subject of Prophecy in the New-Testament era.
pwrt. Luke's account of Agabus'
clearly somewhat
innaccurate prophecy, and it's important ramfications for
the (surviving) gift of prophecy today.
- Taxi to the Raddison nr. Fisherman's Wharf; J. Rocket's
for a bite to eat; disappointed by Barnes and Nobel's Computing
section this time (last time there with Simon); found something
engaging to read though.
- Watched the end of an amusing, and relatively edifying
movie about a just-married couple having a shocking honeymoon, and
the triumph of love+effort over adversity.
