Up early; off to be bled at the hospital - quite medieval really, sent that off to have the tea-leaves read elsewhere. Onto the E-mail.
Discovered my file size limit is not down to broken tooling (rsync failed too) but underlying mind-mangledness. It seems mounting a SL9.3 NFS export [ setup using yast of course ] from an NLD9 box results in a broken 2Gb size limit - that even kills the shell ('SIGXFSZ'):

After some more poking turns out the user-space NFS thing was installed, got the nfs-utils package instead of nfs-server & tried again.
Poked at a really nice complex pivot-table / macro driven spreadsheet our sales guys news - particularly pleased by the macro-backed auto-shapes - a beautiful sheet; a chunk of work to do though.
Wrote a 'redirect' tool to re-write the .direct section using libbfd - marks all _ZThn symbols concrete instead of vague - will measure the win next week.
