How often do we hear "Someone needs to...." market Linux, fund development, make OEM deals, lobby government, and so on? What they're saying is someone else needs to. For FOSS to succeed it needs a strong, genuine, active grass-roots base, and that means you, me, and every Linux and FOSS user. If we abdicate, then the suits take over and it becomes just another strategic element for big business, and we get locked out. Of course that is ultimately self-defeating for businesses, too, ... If Free/Open Source software supporters are serious about how wonderful and valuable FOSS is, a lot more of us need to get off our buns and figure out how to become contributors.I like Andy Upgrove's comment there: "What people look at as community property should be put into non-profit foundations." Amen - though Upgrove's analysis of the copyright issue is I feel naive - can (C) subsist in APIs ? we will see no doubt; that is the crux of that issue.
My content in this blog and associated images / data under
images/
and data/
directories are (usually)
created by me and (unless obviously labelled otherwise) are licensed under
the public domain, and/or if that doesn't float your boat a CC0
license. I encourage linking back (of course) to help people decide for
themselves, in context, in the battle for ideas, and I love fixes /
improvements / corrections by private mail.
In case it's not painfully obvious: the reflections reflected here are my own; mine, all mine ! and don't reflect the views of Collabora, SUSE, Novell, The Document Foundation, Spaghetti Hurlers (International), or anyone else. It's also important to realise that I'm not in on the Swedish Conspiracy. Occasionally people ask for formal photos for conferences or fun.
