Stuff Michael Meeks is doing

This is my (in)activity log. You might like to visit
Collabora
Productivity a subsidiary of Collabora focusing on LibreOffice support and
services for whom I work.
Also if you have the time to read this sort of stuff you could enlighten
yourself by going to Unraveling Wittgenstein's net or if
you are feeling objectionable perhaps here.
Failing that, there are all manner of interesting things to read on
the LibreOffice Planet news
feed.

Mail chew; planning call; admin, marketing call.

Interested by Bjoern's latest blog on the filter
of OSS projects. Lots of good content.
- Not entirely sure I'm convinced. It is unclear to me what a
complement looks like for a pure-play FOSS company with no proprietary
software, tangible hardware, or on-line infrastructure to complement.
- The traditional answer is support and services, and to drive those
you need a strong brand; like RedHat.
- I'm certainly very aware of the pressure to get the price of a
putative "LibreOffice Online" complement down to zero.
- According to Bjoern & Joel
getting that near zero is in the direct financial interest of lots of
"Mom & Pop local FLOSS install/support companies" - so they can
charge more for their services, and presumably in the interest of
hosters, as well as those that bundle it as a component.
- Presumably a zero priced complement has also always been in the
interest of those selling installation/migration/training/book writing
services about LibreOffice on the Desktop too.
- Unfortunately, these businesses seem not to end up investing
anything back into the core code.
- Actually that's unfair - some of them do contribute back. At
Collabora we make that aggregation easy via our awesome partners.
If you get Collabora Online from a partner, you can be confident that
no matter how little the total spend, your support will be applied to
improving FOSS for everyone. I recommend it.
My content in this blog and associated images / data under
images/
and data/
directories are (usually)
created by me and (unless obviously labelled otherwise) are licensed under
the public domain, and/or if that doesn't float your boat a CC0
license. I encourage linking back (of course) to help people decide for
themselves, in context, in the battle for ideas, and I love fixes /
improvements / corrections by private mail.
In case it's not painfully obvious: the reflections reflected here are my
own; mine, all mine ! and don't reflect the views of Collabora, SUSE,
Novell, The Document Foundation, Spaghetti Hurlers (International),
or anyone else.
It's also important to realise that I'm not in on the Swedish Conspiracy.
Occasionally people ask for formal photos for conferences
or fun.
