Mail chew, suffering from T-bird / GNOME interacting
terribly badly - missing audible notifications of appointments,

adding innumerable reminders, tweaking the settings to play
tunes etc. Increasingly desperate for a simple shell-script
hook to just play a noise instead of notifying - but defeated by
business here. Dear lazyweb - does anyone have a simple
python-script to poll an iCal URL and provide popups /
notifications based on what is found ?

Impressed to read about the expulsion

evening at All Saints praying - defeated by groggyness; home
to sleep.

-
Up rather early; train to the strikingly cool post-
industrial conference venue. Various talks.

office too; sleep.

good things missed, and other things to get stuck into.
-
Sync with Lily & Miklos, Pedro, Eloy and others.
Resource juggling here & there.
-
Watched LoTR RoP with babes in the evening, a new
season - since when did Prime subscribers have to watch
adverts for Amazon generated content - odd.

apparatus and Nextcloud Hub 9 preparation excitement.
Plugged away much of the day, good lunch, Frank kindly
dropped me to the airport - good to talk.

attempted some swimming - but the waves were quite intense.
Helped Aron with his kite-surfing sail on the beach &
chatted to Ian & Greer.

Helped J. with her bag-printing activity - removing
fabric paint from many surfaces. Evening entertainment.
-
Up early; plugged away at slides & notes, printing

J. called on the drive to help out B&A; arrived,

Up earlyish, checked-in to various school /
university systems; and out to the Museum of Archaeology,
enjoyed the tools, gold & bog people.

disappointingly little about the text, spiritual content
and its intersection with the art-work.
-
Babes charity-shopping, enjoyed the National
Gallery, met up with the babes at an Irish pub, and on
for dinner with Leish & Hannah at Gotham Cafe, lovely
to catch up with them. On for curious ice-cream at
Murphy's to sample the Brown Bread flavour -
interesting.
-
Walked home together; bed.
-
J. drove me to Belfast, dropped her & N.
drove back to pick-up the rest of the babes. Met up
at the Titanic museum; Five-Guys lunch, and then
enjoyed the Titanic museum. Surprisingly at some
point the babes stopped dragging parents around
museums, and the opposite started happening; fun
for all.
-
J. took H. to the airport, waited with N.
and E. in the rain; and set off back to Dublin;
arrived late, ate, slept.
-
Breakfast, out to Journey
Community Church - lots of nice singing; reasonable
(spring-board) sermon; huge screen with pretty pictures of
the area backing the words.

Pizza for lunch; into Strangford to admire the ferry,
enjoy bits of the ongoing festival, encourage E. and have a
walk by the pretty lough in the drizzle.

-
Up rather late; climbed up to the Cairns - good
to see, lovely view. Into Old Castle for a pub lunch.
-
On to the Lough Lene lake, ladies dipped to
discover that warm as a hot bath - depends rather
on how hot your baths are normally.
-
On to Fore Abbey - some fine ruins, back home
for tea, played charades, filed conference talks for
LibOCon at long last.
-
Up earlyish; out to get E's results from Soham;
on to Hills Road result filing - unclear why a UCAS type
system where they can be automatically filed doesn't work.
-
Final packing; off with J.N.M.E. for an enjoyable
wait for the extremely delayed RyanAir flight to Dublin;
got car sorted; drove to Loughcrew Cairns near Old Castle
slept in a large Yurt; curious.
-
Up early for painters; pleasing progress -
getting there. Apparently Barn Paint is a great
innovation durability-wise - looking good anyway.
-
Plumbing chap turned up - fitted a wonderful
flexible hose on garage pump: massive improvement in
transmitted noise level to the house. Replaced terrible
quality, ultra cheap Victoria Plumb shower fittings
with good quality Aqualtis versions: brass not plastic,
design not cost engineering: lets see.
-
Packed, read around Matthew 5 more, helped J.
lever out a couple of particularly nasty tree roots
from an ex. hedge; bit of work here & there.
-
Up early for painters; longer partner call early.
Quick mail and spent a while reading & preparing -
working but at a lower intensity is really quite relaxing.

estimation, bit of a work'y stay-cation so far. Lunch. Catch
up with Lily somewhere; plugged away at preparing for Sizewell -
the talk on the Sermon on the Mount.
-
Somewhat less early up: locking the door seems a good
strategy. Played at All Saints with Beckie. Home for a final
lunch with the wider family. Packed & a fond farewell to
much loved brothers families.
-
Rested at some length; watched Travellers - somehow
the rather open-ended and fluid narrative structure suspends
disbelief into the second series thus far.
-
Helped J, to dig holes for rose planting; ate with
the babes.
-
Awoken too early by Nephews; breakfast & relaxed
with them - brothers out shopping, minded four babes for a

cardboard, played at pegging each other unawares.

retrospective call into the evening.
-

piano & organ. Back for pizza lunch.
-
Out to see J&K&P in the afternoon in Teversham
with some babes & Leanne. Enjoyed our time together, borrowed
some books.
-
Up earlyish; plugged away at trying to restore usability and
migrate date; learned
cryptsetup luksOpen and other
choice pieces.
-
XFCE causing chromium / chrome to not start; field a ticket,
switched to GNOME - and finally managed to find a small set of
extensions that make it comfortably productive within my shrivelled
learnability threshold : Workspace Matrix, Tiling Assistant, Date
Menu Formatter.

Lovely to have tear-free Wayland based video playback, and
high-speed GL - nice - bit worried that being closer to the defaults
may reduce my ability to catch badness early when testing.
-
Out for a walk with J. - lovely to spend some time together.

Slept extremely badly; a couple of drinks triggering the
"stay up all night and work on your slides" Meeks - conference
mode? chewed through lots of work until 5am on our mobile test harness.
-
Up earlyish, negotiation call; mail chew, TTT. New SSD
arrived, set about installing the latest openSUSE 15.6.

-
Mail chew; chat with Darshan, plugged away at
various necessary documents. J. had a YFC lunch meeting
here which was fun.
-
Plugged away at WebKitGtk - switching to gtk4 -
even the simple samples don't work;
/usr/lib/libwebkitgtk-6_0-0/MiniBrowser helpfully warns
WebProcess CRASHED - grief.
-
Wrestled in desparation with the Qt alternative;
a similar mountain of nightmares, non compiling samples,
missing macros, unknown modules, complaining of missing
QML at run-time; at least the pre-compiled sample worked
though.
-
Planning call, long sales engineering call.
-
Lots of struggling with WebKit gtk+ frontend; apparently even
simple things fail to work for me, ported our Online / mobile test
harness from webkit2gtk-4.0 (based on gtk+ 3.0), to webkit2gtk-4.1.
No joy - regressions around browser inspection, and a hung browser,
hmm.
-
Mail chew - with newly migrated mail servers; hmm. Amused
that an unusual job description from LinkedIn generates more
interesting spam:
"Michael, as the Christian & Hacker at Collabora Ltd you know how hard choosing the right global employment and work payment partner can be."
presumably some new AI super-brain made the connection.

lovely Adriatic
Kayaking Tour.

Floated in the Adriatic with the babes,

-
Suffered a terrible case of range-anxiety: having got
used to the electric car being 100% fully charged whenever I
leave to go out; I was amazed to notice the hybrid car having

petrol station; hey ho.

-
BBQ together, and played smash-up; bed early.
-
Up unfeasibly early; flight to Stanstead, drove
home; lovely to see the family again - tired. Caught up

financials backlog. Fell asleep on the sofa rather
unhelpfully - eventually got to bed.

Up early; poked patches going through gerrit;
drove with J. to Ipswich Hospital to meet Anne &
Bruce.
-
Home; hacked much of the afternoon & evening.
-
Up early; run with J. plugged away at finding
an unhelpful but extremely transient thread that defeats
background saving through code-reading & logging.
-
Great Tea Time Training on architecture &
design from Caolan.
-
Back to thread hunting; eventually found the thread
we launch to count time in the background of some progress
bar process so we don't get flooded with events, and don't
have to call gettimeofday on every progress update. Re-wrote
it to be cleaner & more general, and shut it down at
a sensible time; a fun evening.
-
Mail chew, read profiles, technical planning call.
COOL community meeting and encouraging testing call. E.
home on the bus.
-
Poked at profiles, and dug away at some nonsense
tile description re-parsing to further accelerate 24.04;
really fun to see the ever changing and improving
flame-graphs go past.
-
We released Collabora Online 24.04 - ready for
Enterprises to start upgrading - with lots of lovely
new features and improvements both from Collabora, and the
wider LibreOffice technology community.
Really pleased to have a great marketing team that know about
social platforms so I can stick with emacs + a python RSS generator:
Mastodon,
Linked-In,
X,
facebook and
instagram.

-
24.04 stand-up, some last minute patch reviews before
branching.
-
Worked on slides, monthly mgmt meeting. H. home in the
evening with Lara - on the way to Spain; lovely to have her home.
-
Mail chew, various 1:1's worked to try to find out what
transient thread could be stopping background save intermittently;
joined a webdav thread and a config writing one; hmm.
-
24.04 stand-up, lot of last-minute moving pieces - fun.
-
Somewhat surreal experience of DirectLine writing to us
about a collision with a car (in a car-park apparently) which made
no discernable damage - or perhaps it did, but - not visually
distinguishable from the various other small dings in the bumper:
from experience it is always important to reverse your brand new car
into your own gate to avoid getting too precious about the finish
over its lifetime.
-
All Saints, great to have Eben with us; home for a
fine pizza lunch, relaxed in the sun with J.
-
M. took E. to StAG - the joy of a new driver,
watched a silly action movie, and had a walk with J. to
watch the sunset.
-
Plugged away for much of the day at background save,
closing a number of so-far theoretical problems and writing some
more tests. Worked late.
-
Dug into very disturbing logging churn in 24.04 - after
eliminating lots of much nastier problems etc. discovered I'd
just mis-placed a brace around the log-line - hey ho.
-
Mail chew, tech. planning call, COOL community call, daily
24.04 stand-up, lunch, marketing call, interview. More marketing
work. Partner / customer call.

Significantly accelerated ModifiedStatus notification to close
a race, and fixed a number of bugs. Dropped E. to a GSCE over
lunch. Got various bits merged in the evening, and CI happy.

race between websocket and a new http connection to the same server
to help stabilize unit tests.
-
Evening partner meeting over dinner for some hours.
-
Up earlyish All Saints communion / music in the
morning. Pizza lunch - in the garden, shade-sail rope
snapped: odd replaced it with J.
-
J. out to StAG with babes; played guitar for
the evening service. Back, watched Dirk Gently before
bed.

etc. Plugged away at bug-fixing & background save pieces
for COOL-24.04.
-
Lunch; prepared music for tomorrow's evening service.
David over in the afternoon, enjoyed the sun & caught up
somewhat. Dinner & did a bit of business revision with E.
-
Plugged away at another set of bgsave issues -
leftover tile renders getting called in the wrong process,
-
Picked up E. from Soham - 1st GCSE exam done - nice,
high spirits; a bit of lunch.
-
Wrote slides for a Tea Time Training on logging, realized
quite how verbose we are, and spent a while cleaning up the
logging code to make it friendlier; now if you do nothing,
nothing spews out in the log. Gave the talk.
-
Small fixes to truncate super-long JSON debug dumps, and
to stop the frenzy of 'fsync'ing that we do (NSS's sqlite for
certificate management) - as well as many files we write to;
sync 'fsync' is for us a successful up-load to the remote
storage, none of that is needed (and it is at least visible
on latency profiles).
-
BBQ dinner.
-
Up early, took E. to school; tech. planning,
COOL community call, CODE 24.04 release retrospective.
-
Split callback processing and queueing out from
incoming message processing, collapsed classes, made the
message queueing code far cleaner and more efficient.
Avoided lots of message re-parsing / tokenizing.
-
Put hooks on external doors to hold them open against
the wind; more wire for J's roses put up in the garden.
-
Up early, out for a run with J. To work - booked

removing over-abstraction and un-necessary code in Kit
message handling.

Dropped E. to school; Planning call, M's driving test -
a pass! encouraging - less Taxi-ing needed for a bit. Calls,
E-mail backlog chewed.
-
Design review with Caolan; finally made progress on my
unit test problem: being too quick: if we clear modification
& then re-modify a document before we had time to get
notified - we don't get notified; hmm.
-
Up lateish; breakfast at 'the cafe' - our front patio
in the sun. Adjusted camera with J. and M. & checked with
Sue & Russel.
-
Ordered various necessaries & fittings on-line -
attempting to seal poorly sealed Dot
& Dab.
-
Plugged away at adding more unit tests; interesting
behaviors. Out for a run with J. and movie in the evening.
-
All Saints, family service. Pizza lunch. Played
Rummikub together, pottered about the garden, watched
Netflix' newish Dirk Gently series; fun.
-
Up lateish; off to B&A's - hacked in the car on
various bgsave race pieces.
-
Caught up with B&A, fine lunch, mended the
plumbing; had to use a re-seating cutter on the brass tap
seat; no dripping. Tightened diagonal tensioner on potting
shed door to make it open.
-
Home to see and feed the revising M&E with a
fish & chip dinner.
-
Day of (mostly) hacking on background save - plugged
away at writing more unit tests for interesting potential races.
Lots of complexity waiting to mug you when you're not looking,
improved unit testing infrastructure here and there.
-
Tech planning call, sync with Lily, mail backlog.
-
Booked flights to the next LibreOffice Technology
Hackfest
in Budapest - hosted by Miklos. Should be a great place to
work on all things LibreOffice & Collabora Online.
-
Got background save progress updates to not interrupt
the user with a popover, but use the file-name 'renaming'
progress animation instead.
-
Getting rather into collaborative SUDOKU with J. -
rather a nice companionable thing to do together.
-
Mail chew; caught up with the backlog mostly.

cleanups on the plane / train.

many. Out in the evening to a Brau-hause with a mix of attendees,

off to Munich, got to the station before moving the
flight to tomorrow; good.
-

have no real grip to the enamel, and composite is the
way to go (mostly) at the weekend.
-
Dinner with the family; helped E. with some
Maths revision.
-
All Saints, Sue gave her testimony; minuted
the APCM PCC meeting etc. back for Pizza lunch with
M. and E.

share some time with the wider family.
-
Dropped N. back to Loughborough; drove home, more
work in the evening.
-
Encouraging design call; lunch, all afternoon
workshop. Fixed a couple of bugs, slugged in the evening.
-
Steeled myself to re-subscribe to the Economist -
very disappointed by the rules on the Digital subscription
making it un-share-able; who would spend that much per
person in their household, to replace a paper copy that
can be shared ?
-
Tech planning call, COOL community call.
Background save, lunch, marketing call, sync. with
Eloy on sales. Raced background save deadline fixing
more things. Home-group on 1 Thessalonians.

home - exhausted.
-
Bit of hacking on background save for the looming
COOL 24.04 deadline. Lunch.
-
Helped J. get some wire for rose training on the
garden fence; more work on talk for tomorrow on
Mark
1:29-39.
-
Spent much of the afternoon helping E. improve at
python for her looming GCSE in Computer Science; fun.
-
Attempt to catch up with E-mail; and get background
save into a better state - some good progress. Poked at a talk
for Sunday evening in the evening; bed.
-
Breakfast, bid 'bye to various friends & partners.
In-person all-hands meeting for much of the morning with the
Collabora team - should have done more hands-on / un-conference /
brain-storming: will do next time.
-
Relaxed & chatted, took people to the station, spent
more time with others waiting; home in the late afternoon exhausted.
-
Late partner meeting, slept exhaustedly.
-
Breakfast, a morning of talks. Gave a brief wrap-up; lunch.
-
Partner & customer roadmap workshop in the afternoon -
lots of good ideas & useful feedback and priority rankings.
-
Caught the end of the hack-fest, drinks & had a chance to
thank various people including Kendy for their hard work and
contribution. Dinner in the evening with J. Up extremely late with
a number of the team.
-
Fine breakfast, started on the ~100 five minute lightning
talks we have this year - unclear if it is the best format; will we
have to split into a business and technical track at some stage -
probably; until then it's nice to have everyone together.
-
One novel-ish talk on improving interactivity:
-
Nice lunch, many more talks, interesting talk at the Astronomy
department in the evening with some great animations and diagrams,
back for some drinks, up late.
-
Mail chew, patch pushing, packed, and off into Cambridge
to the office pack the car with boxes of good things to give away
at COOL days.
-
Got bits to the Moller institute, unpacked things variously,
met up with people left & right, checked in - nice room;
shepherded people to the team building, collected & drove
stragglers.
-
Assembled pedal cars together in teams and raced them; managed
to land in the middle: its all about belt tension it seems.
-
Back for drinks & dinner, got to meet lots of partners
for the first time in person.
-
All Saints, children's service, played with H.
-
Roast Pork lunch, played games with the family
& watched movies.
-
Mail chew, abandoned problematic named-pipe approach for
randomness, it involves sucking randomness into the ether - in a
O_NONBLOCK socket buffer to no purpose; annoyingly.
-
Instead worked on a new & simpler plan to inherit a
file-descriptor to
/dev/urandom and a magic symbol
that dup's and hands out a descriptor to that left & right;
much cleaner & simpler.
-
Eventually got that working; out to see Dune (part 2)
at the brand-new, un-findable on the internet, and so somewhat
under-attended, but very fine
Newmarket Cinema.
Interesting movie.
-
Back to my nemesis - named pipes; while it is
possibly to have multiple readers - who get random bits
of the random numbers to the pipe (perhaps a feature)
unfortunately extremely inelegant for these reasons:
- Opening O_WRONLY | O_NONBLOCK gives an
inexplicable ENXIO error, odd
- Seems you need a pointless O_NONBLOCK reader
opening the pipe before you can open O_NONBLOCK
to write and poll on it - so wasting a file
descriptor.
- Trying to close that after the open just
gives endless EPIPE - so just leak it.
- Unfortunately now we have to read a lot of
random numbers to fill the O_NONBLOCK pipe buffer
which is probably not good for anyone; hmm.
-
Switched to using getentropy() and/or getrandom()
system-call backed random data reading instead of devices.
Spent quite a long time digging through lots of disappointingly
duplicated NSS code to get it happy. Eventually got there,
hopefully no more users getting bitten by mounting
nodev, removing CAP_MKNOD from
our permission set.
-
N. cooked a fine dinner; slugged with the babes
doing misc. petting until late.
-
Tech planning & community calls, marketing
catch-up. Plugged away at an idea to switch
/dev/random devices in jails with
named-pipes. Got something to start & hang after
a while.
-
COOL-days lightning talk slide polish,
plugged at getting background save working nicely.
Curious CI failures unlikely to be related to my
work; hmm.
-
Band practice in the evening.
-
Planning call, marketing call, customer call.
-
Sad to notice Vernor Vinge pass away.
-
Setup new stocks ISA - end of tax year,
lets see if I can resist the allure of a gameified
trading platform.
-
Up lateish; drove to St Albans with the family
to meet up with Sue & family.
-
Removed 4% of CPU from a week-long profile of our
demo servers: avoiding lots of extension querying with a
one line change: fun.

for Easter Sunday, good congregation & singing,
H. doing well on the Organ.
-
David & Jocelyn over for lunch, caught
up with them.

hypothetical) re-entrancy issues for fun.

potential earth containers to fit a vacuum separator.
-
Home, split up background save bits to push.
Watched Damsel with the babes, soup dinner.
Played Rumikub with the family.
-
Mail, admin, tech planning, COOL community
call. Group of partners call, marketing strategy
call; lots of calls.
-
Discovered that using an A2 M8 bolt as a die
to thread a pencil makes a great fidget toy.
-
Finally got to some hacking; Caolan found the
watchdog thread could trigger perf via an unusual
syscall (futimestat); but it would just sample the
watchdog thread. Fixed that by moving it into a signal
handler with signals.
Finally can get pretty flamegraph profiles of particularly
slow things quite simply with
perf record -e syscalls:sys_enter_futimesat. Grateful for Brendan
Gregg's great profiling site - bought his book for
good measure.
-
Early partner training call, partner call, sync
with Caolan on the not entirely obvious SfxMedium code.
Lunch. Catch up with Naomi & Lily. Sales call, poked
at background save.

organ for Peter. Home for a lovely roast lamb lunch,
exhausted relaxation - movies, crisps, rest.
-
Up earlyish, packed tools variously; off to
David S' with H. joined by Chance & David M.
Managed to get the next stair flight up-stairs, and
to fit the work platform.
-
Dry-fitted stairs, and cut/routed to size,
got tricky winding corners all aligned etc. Break
for tea & cake.
-
Set too with the glue - and somehow managed
to get everything nicely fitted, glued, pegged,
screwed to the wall etc. The third stair case fitted,
and by far the best. Bid thanks & 'bye to Chance
& H.
-
Lunch with David M, back to get the final
pieces glued in & steps fitted. Home exhausted.
-
Mexican dinner, N. creating refried beans;
Three Body Problem with the family.
-
Check-in with Rash, Quikee & Lily on K8s,
sync with Lily. Finished E-mail, and got to some hacking.
-
Polished background save a lot; eventually got
to something good, only to discover that CoW of memory
is not enough, the forked background process deletes
things from the file-system that the parent process
needs for the next save: hmm. Started working on that.
-
Tech planning call, COOL community call and some
testing action; new staff on-boarding / three month
orientation catch-up. Sync with wider marketing group.
-
Interesting start-up demo / pitch. Plugged away
at patch merging & improving unit test behavior.

David S's.
-

SocketPoll workings in much more detail. Band practice,
worked until late.
-
Mail chew, planning call, sync with Naomi & Lily,
lunch, monthly mgmt meeting, poked at some overdue 24.04 coding
treats - discovered some corner-case performance issue by
lengthing our fallback poll loop waits substantially; fun.
-
Mail chew; day of 1:1's and catch-up admin & planning.
-
Reflecting on why I get -so- spam these days, I suspect
LinkedIn likes to target on 'CEO' job title instead of the much
more opaque 'General Manager'; if I wasn't so busy turning down
the corporate 'enlargement services' equivalent I'd test that.
-
Up earlyish, breakfast with the parents, bid a fond farewell
& drove home. N. cooked lunch; J. and N. went to visit Izzie,
H.M. & E. to StAG; relaxed variously - watched The King -
interesting; its good to have a wife who speaks frankly to you.

Durham. Set too at a wiring problem in the kitchen; soup.
Out to Toolstation to collect some pieces. More wiring in the

& bed.

-
Encouraging partner call in the evening.

patch backlog, lunch, sales call, poked at socket management
in forkit, found some un-necessarily carried over wakeups; good.
-
Up earlyish, finished slides; got to the conference,
caught up with lots more people - good to get deeper on lots
of technology, as well as getting some great feedback around
COOL.
-
Gave a talk on what's up with COOL:
-
Bid 'bye variously; set off home; hacked on
background save in the plane; encouragingly found some
other efficiency wins too.
-
Up at 1:40am, drove to Gatwick, plane to Geneva.
Spent quite some time trying to accelerate the CPU version
of the RLE code amusingly without success: fun.
-
Off to CERN; arrived in time for CS3 - great to
meet lots of old friends, tons of customers & partners.
Good stuff.
-
Enjoyed talks, tour of some of the facilities, more
talks, largest survey response so far of users shows that
(for Office tools) - Collabora is (just) at the top of for
the 1st year; encouraging.
-
Dinner bits in the evening, and tram back to the
hotel with some friends.
-
All Saints, played in the music group; back for
a pizza lunch with J. picked up babes from their camp,
sorted out the evening service; relaxed a bit.

our RLE code-paths for some real-world tiles;
generated some numbers.
-
Out to a Garden Centre with J. then shopping; lunch.
Out for a walk with J. to Lode (not the LibreOffice
tool of the same name) - managed to navigate lots of mud,
and enjoy the scenery.
-
Home; poked at perf results and with an hour or
so of chewing got another 17% off the Avx2 RLE
code:
// load and arrange 8x pixel chunks & a shifted version
vpermd %ymm0,%ymm1,%ymm5

Turns out using the CPU's built-in 8bit writing for the 8 pixel
mask is far more efficient than masking it into 64bit registers
which is cute. Should really simplify the RLE setup and
shifting part with _mm256_maskz_permutexvar_epi32 at some
stage, and really ought to 256bit align the memory too
at some stage. Seems it is 4.5x faster - than the not entirely
naive C version which chews 64 pixel chunks thus:
// simplified inner loop for 64 pixel chunks
for (; bitToSet; ++x, bitToSet <<= 1)
{
if (from[x] == lastPix)
rleMask |= bitToSet;
else
{
lastPix = from[x];
scratch[outp++] = lastPix;
}
}

descriptions, prepped for and gave a Tea Time Trainig
(TTT) on various architectural directions for online.

no-one in it.

mobile control app despite looking the same; hey ho.

and code reading with Neil around a unit test failure.

lots of useful findings - and really great to see everyone in
person and catch up somewhat.
-
Hacked a bit on the plane back, drove home, tired.
-
Drove to Stansted; caught up with Gokay; rather
delayed flight. Hacked up a tool to annotate unshared pages
with names of pointers into shared libraries to better
unwind the origin of dirtied pages.

Out for dinner with some friends at the Long March
Canteen - which despite the name thankfully featured (nice)
food.
-
Mail chew, interview & offer with Miklos.

Into Cambridge with J. , on to
the Moller Institute for a tour of the rather lovely
COOL
days venue.
-
Back; sales catch-up with Eloy, sync with Caolan.
-
Mail chew, planning call, took car to have tires
changed, bought J, some flowers on the way back. Patch
review, sync with Neil. J. took N. back to university,
worked late.
-
Started CofE Domestic Violence safeguarding
training; sad its necessary really.
-
Took E. to school; bit of a mail backlog to process; started
on it. Call with Calc team; 1:1's with Miklos, Pedro, marketing
content call; more 1:1's, partner call.

on first four beatitudes.
-
Home for a Pizza lunch with the family; and some
applied resting.

Slept, worked on slides & text for Sunday much of
the day. Out to see Aaron & Sharn, and for a walk in the sun.

a Fish & Chip lunch.
-
Home to the babes; N. returning from university -
not so well for nursing.

Holiday; pootled off with J. to Gainsborough's House
museum in Sudbury - amazed at the volume of space given to Rebecca
Salter's disappointingly inaccessible work. Amused by many of
Gilray's pieces.

previously home of Viscount
Byng - now a good place for relaxing with a spouse. Fine dinner

Lydia playing bass; Lunch, rested, out for a walk, J.

-
Up earlyish; J. counselling, out to David's to look
at stair-cases; with David M's help built support platform for the
stairs, measured and got the upper stair plate cut and into place,
home for lunch with J.
-
Got newel post cut and fitted - it fits!; set to adjusting
the platform to get the main stair run up, but somewhat defeated by
its weight - liftable with two, but waving it two stories up in
the air - less easy. Called it a day.
-
Home, tea with J. together, watched Idiocracy -
rather amusing but the Eugenicists rallying film; best paired
with Gattaca perhaps.

Mail, sync with Timur, tech planning call, COOL community
meeting, calc stand-up. Plugged away at incredibly tedious contract
review all afternoon.
-
Particularly struck by the appearance of log4j
alongside asbestos risks or pollution in Hiscox
tech insurance. Somehow Apache dodged a bullet by not having their
brand all over that.
"What is not covered[1]:
...
A. 19 asbestos risks or pollution.
...
A. 21 or contributed to by, resulting from or in connection with the Common Vulnerability and Exposure (CVE) reference CVE-2021-44228 listed in the National Vulnerability Database operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology." (Log4j vulnerability)
The first ever software security issue I've seen show up as an
exclusion like this.
-

chat with Chris.
-
Tech planning, COOL community, and calc standup; sync
with Paris. Lunch, conference retrospective - lots of actions;
and catch up with Neil. Patch review.
-
Mail catch-up, lots of it - I need to take a more
drastic approach to reducing my visibility & mail backlog:
more delegation, less supervision: set-too at that.
-
Started reading Ringworld to M. N. home in the
evening - lovely to see her.
-
Up early, breakfast, Eurostar home; started
catching up on E-mail; calmed down debug churn from
various over-enthusiastic bits of socket code, and
plugged away at background saving for COOL - first
shut down the threads, then fork, then save etc.

back; impressed by Jono's pitch for his community
accelerator; good to talk to Andrew Waafa and wended
my way home - tired.

caught up with Caolan & Skyler. Plugged away at a
few fun hacking pieces: reviewed a patch or two,

re-factored a CSS visitor iterator & implemented
some image pre-fetching, and made signal-safe logging
much more detailed.

then Caolan & Thorsten on COWASM.
-
Gave a joint talk with Caolan, which had the merit
of being rather technical:
-
Back to the booth, and talked with more interesting
people left & right. Tram to Beta Co-working for a fine
community dinner hosted by the Italian community, lots
of conversation; bed late.
-
Up with J. and E. - bid 'bye to M. too, packed,
taxi (train strike) to Cambridge, KGX, Eurostar to
Brussels for FOSDEM. Met an interesting Mozilla Foundation
speaker on speech recording in the lobby.
-
Increasingly annoyed by the amazing things that
happen if you indent the first line of an E-mail and use
sensible wrapping; apparently I need to evolve from the
lizard phase into letting someone else's mail client
wrap my lines, and try to make them look attractive
rather than trying to do that for people; hey ho.
-
Finished various admin bits on the train; got to
the Hotel Bedford; poked at an overdue memory optimization
in COOL, and off to the FLOSS Foundations dinner; ended up
in the Bedford lobby with various LibreOffice guys until
late.

with the team.
-
Mail chew, partner call; list admin, waded through
mail; time to filter our internal marketing team's list.
-
Call with Neil, merged a number of fixes. Prodded
at and fixed some dubious random number behavior inside
unit tests causing problems. Truck load of admin.
-
Unbelievably irritated by the github password reset
captcha not only 20 interactive images to interate through
taking 5 minutes, but no way to go back if you accidentally
click the wrong one, and even after passing and getting a
green tick: Unable to verify your captcha response.
Please visit ... amazing.

has some marginal utility it seems.

backed-up E-mail, patch review etc. in the plane:
lots of good things.

conference centre; booth setup, talked to lots of
people. Enjoyed Lily's Workshop in German, lunch,
gave my keynote in English; more talking to
partners, customers, getting product feedback,
good ideas; all the fun of the Univention Summit.
-
Fine conference dinner later with Thorsten.
-
Slept badly, not improved by waking at 4:15am, drove
to Stansted; flight to Hamburg, quite exciting - aborted
landing, holding waiting for less windy weather: acute
turbulence, vomitting passengers the works; fun. Landed
eventually. Up-hill walking through the wind to get car.
-
Visited Thorsten, good to catch up; fine lunch,
caught up with B. briefly - much grown; drove to Bremen
in quite some wind - exciting.
-
Out to pre-conference dinner with Lily, met up
with lots of old friends, and talked over this &
that; bed late.
-
Dropped E. to school; planning call, mail chew, lunch.
Sync with Eloy, poked at filing more tickets. Plugged away at

-
Mail chew, massive German rail-strike - annoying; hired
car for the Hamburg to Bremen leg to make it to the Univention Summit.
-
Various 1:1's left & right, marketing content call,

of hacking, and surfeit of meetings & admin in the last week.

Relaxed deeply in the afternoon & evening.

All Saints band practice.
-

members about to show off their records. An amazingly brief,
time-boxed weekly planning call. Customer call, monthly
management call. Poked at some code.
-
Boxed in water tank again with insulated plasterboard.
-
Mail chew, 1:1's with the team, bit of code reading
in the afternoon, poked at Marketing, slides, recorded a
video message.
-
Weather cold: time for the thermal camera - profile
before optimizing. Minuted All Saints PCC meeting - remarkably
brief; perhaps related to the temperature of the Church.
-
All Saints in the morning; Cedric playing; home for Pizza
lunch, tired. Read book, slugged at home avoiding the cold.
-
Up lateish, read in bed; sorted out the PCC Minutes
backlog and spammed Docusign left & right.
-
Poked at pump capacitor - soldered previous spade
connectors on, and
as if by magic, and with some force-overriding to clear air
a working pump! made significantly quieter by proper rubber
mounting bearings - nice.
-
Lunch; out to see David & Heather, re-inforce
their stair balustrade & put in place the parts of a
platform to safely erect the next flight of stairs from.
-
David M. over for dinner. Up late reading; hmm -
need to build better self control in Sci-Fi book chapters.
-
Somehow tired after the first full week of getting back
into the run of things - so many encouraging things going on,
but lots of things to track & chase.
-
Catch up call with Lily, Quikee & Rash on K8s.
Plugged at admin, with small bits of hacking in between times.
-
Slugged in the evening with E. and J. watching
nonsense. Started to read The Mote in God's Eye -

chap; set too getting pump better mounted, tank cleaned out & so
on, replaced switch on the pump.
-
Release schedule planning call; tech planning, COOL community
call and some testing; calc polishing call, lunch. Poked at slides
and misc. admin with Lily.
-
New pump flow/pressure controller also blowing fuses:
discovered the source of the electrolyic smell: big motor start
run capacitor with burned electrolyte oozing from it: fun -
perhaps a much cheaper fix in the end; ordered one.
-
Cell group in the evening, nice to see people.
-
Early partner, project wrap-up call. Caught up with Lily,
plugged through lots of admin. Weekly sales meeting.
-
Amused to see my enthusiasm about
smaps_rollup
somewhat tempered by an amazing issue, heorically found & fixed
by Caolan. On some systems rewinding & re-reading the file grows
it indefinitely. Why do that you ask? owing to permission models, even if
you drop privileges a normal process can't see your /proc/smaps_rollup,
so we have to open once, pass the descriptor via a UDS to the supervising
process and ... similar fun. Thankfully Linus fixed it already it seems.
-
Partner call. All Saints band practice with E. in the evening.
-
Mail chew, attempted a shorter planning call. Calc
stand-up - encouraging to see the focused team & ongoing
progress.
-

the volume of things that need doing, picking up the task
queue again.
-
All Saints Worship committee in the evening; fun.
-
Breakfast with the boys, dressed, bid 'bye & set off
to pick up J. Chatted some more to the ladies & set off for
home, nearly ran out of fuel in a competence shortfall: range
anxiety!
-
Home, out for a walk with J. Sermon from Park Street,
a bit of work, watched movies and hibernated in the cold with
2 the kids.
-
Up earlyish, packed the car and drove N. back to
Loughborough - Pizza in-town, and a fond farewell.
-
Drove J' to a meet-up of her lovely friends at the
now extended home of Claire
who it seems is doing wonderful things for safeguarding in
her normal bubbly way. Great to see them all briefly.
-
To R's house - got some cupboard doors mounted,
attacked stabilizing the new bathroom floor-boards with
bits of wood here & there, found & hung a door in
R's frame. Played with nephews, fish & chip supper,
read bedtime stories, up late chatting to R. and watching
this & that.
-
Partner call earlyish; got into some code reading &
hacking - de-bonged some excessive logging I created.
-
Visited the optician to discover that my Monovision is
not significantly worse, and even a somewhat desireable state
to be in. Luckily - can still focus on code and E-mail.
-
Tech planning, and COOL community calls, sync with
Julie, catch up with Mike K, admin, cleanup.
-
Started working back through Christmas E-mail, mostly got
caught up; sync with Gokay. Discovered the smaps_rollup
while poking at a profile & strace; nice - an easy win.
-
Mail chew, sync with Miklos, quick forward looking planning
call & catch up with much of the mgmt team. Poked at a regression
quickly. Reading King Solomon's Mines to the babes - very much
a product of its time. Bit more costume drama with the kids.
-
More mail poking, bit of hacking, finished Pride &
Prejudice TV series in the evening.
-
Up earlyish; out for a run with J. helped mop the Church floor.
Bits of admin; more tidying up - unpacking a rather large box lurking
in my office for too long: lots of difficult to sort bits in it annoyingly.
-
Re-assembled sofa in lounge to create lots more space,
removing an un-needed turning corner; slugged with the babes and
watched costume drama.
